Alford, Sr. and Edward Williams; sisters, Lola Parker, Vada Marden, Ada Arhar, and Georgia Evans; and brothers, Nathan Tart, and Garland Tart…. She was born in Henderson County, the daughter of the late J.B. Russell and Bertie Russell and had been an area resident all of her life. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Roy Halford, who passed away in 2005.

Most off all, Evelyn enjoyed spending time with her family. MIDDLESEX—Mary Elizabeth Alford, 88, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2016. Arrangements are by Joyner’s Funeral Home, Wilson. Her husband, John Vernon Alford (1921–1978), was born 5 Feb 1921 in NC, the son of Ben Moore Alford and Martha Ella Tharrington. Survivors include her sister, Margie Warfel of Trenton, N.J.; and a grandson.

Mrs. Ackerman was born Apri1 24, 1925 daughter of the late Noah Frank and Ida Gaddy Alford, Sr. She graduated from Laurinburg High School in 1943. Mary was a loving and devoted homemaker and retired from J.P. After retiring, she worked part time for the Scotland County Literacy Council and worked as a volunteer for Hospice of Scotland County. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Born on April 7, 1928 in Madison County she was the daughter of the late E.K. Melba retired from Drexel Heritage and was a member of Harmony Grove Baptist Church. She was a very loving and giving person who was adored by her nieces and nephews.
Melba enjoyed baking, especially fruit cake, and in her generosity, she shared with members of the community. Roy’s mother, Goldie age 12 SC, and her sister Annie 15 SC, are listed incorrectly as the stepdaughters of Harmon Willis Alford on the 1920 census in Chester Co., SC. They are his daughters, listed with Harmon and his first wife Minnie on the 1910 census in Union Co., SC. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. J. David Alford and an infant son; and a sister, Irene H. Dickens.
While there, she met and married her husband, Hugh Inman Alford, Jr., a World War II veteran who later became an entomologist for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. After raising her children, she returned to the workforce as a Registered Nurse at The Governor Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh and then as a night duty nurse at Mayview Convalescent Center in Raleigh. Lindsay’s memory will be cherished by her loving cousins, Bradley Sherrod, Travis Sherrod, Katie Pridgen, Cliff Pridgen and his wife, Monica; and their children, Bryson and Abby.

Her brother, Don Hugh Massey also preceded her in death. The funeral for Virginia Alford Rose, 86, of 233 Alleghany Dr., who died Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at her home, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, June 13, in the Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by Elder Calvin Harward and Elder Kenneth Hopkins.
